Day 8
Napflio
Question: Nafplios' distinct traditional architectural style, shown by the colorful buildings surrounding the old town, was greatly influenced by the Venetians when they conquered the city between 1338 and 1540. If this historical event had not happened, how do you think the architecture would look now?
Nafplio, a city in the Peloponnese region of Greece, is known for its rich history, Venetian architecture, and as the first capital of modern Greece. It served as the capital from 1823 to 1834 before the capital was moved to Athens. Nafplio is also known for its well-preserved Venetian castles, including Palamidi and Akronafplia, and the charming Bourtzi fortress on a small island in the harbor.
We arrived and checked into our hotel, (Leto Nuevo), dropped our bags and then hiked through Old Town and up the 800 + steps to the Palamidi Fortress. We explored the ruins, took in the views and then headed for a swim in the Aegean Sea, (rounding out getting to swim in both the Ionian and Aegaean Seas this trip). We enjoyed some time walking through the cobblestone streets and checking out the shops before dinner. We of course ended the night with an ice cream challenge and some more time in the town square.
